Tackling Homophobia and Transphobia

Over the pasts year there is a steady rise in homophobic attacks across London and the UK – this is unacceptable. This campaign seeks to eliminate hate crimes against LGBT people and calls for better policing of our community.  We want to see stronger laws to deter those who advocate transphobia and homophobia and proper punishment for those who carry out attacks. LGBT people deserve protection.

The campaign was launched on 25 November 2009 at the Quebec Bar, London by Pride London patron Naechanè Romeo.   Naechanè was originally born in Guyana, a Commonwealth country where being LGBT is still both socially unacceptable and very much a criminal offence .  Other patrons supporting the campaign include Peter Tatchell and Stephen K Amos.

What are we doing?

  • Working on a ‘Safe Sport’ policy to encourage sportsmen and women to come out, to highlight legal protections, and on how to tackle often casual homophobia at sporting events
  • Working with the Metropolitan Police to improve reporting of LGBT crime and to publicise initiatives on reducing it
  • Working with LGBT venues to ensure a safe and friendly environment for all
