+ AN ARTISTIC BENT..?
Thoughts in London have already turned to the 2008 Pride Arts Festival
Over 200 visual arts, comedy and theatre events took part in the run-up to Pride London 2007. The Pride Arts Festival has become a key part of Pride London and the Pride Festival which promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture and understanding.
“We are a community charity, run by volunteers, and the arts festival is fast becoming one of the most successful things we do!” commented Paul Birrell, Chair of Pride London “being from Edinburgh I appreciate a good festival and understand the amount of work that goes into creating one. To be something worthy of London we do need people to get involved in their event.”
Pride London is seeking people to help shape the festival – programmers, fundraisers, publicity experts, steering committee members to name but a few. If you want to play a part in creating the best LGBT arts and culture event in the world please email

+ PRIDE LIFESTYLE EXHIBITION NOT ASSOCIATED WITH PRIDE LONDON
Pride London is concerned that Pride Lifestyle, an event run by Eton Events Ltd of Eastbourne, claims to be part of Pride London
In a number of press releases and on its website (and that of the event organiser) the event claims to be "The Lifestyle Exhibition of Pride London" and "exclusively in conjunction with Pride London". The event's publicity and sponsorship documents, as well as its websites, also carry the logo of Pride London as well as copyrighted images belonging to the charity.
We would like to clarify that at the time of this publicity no approach had been made to the Board of Trustees of Pride London, and that no association has been agreed between Pride London or its Arts Festival, and Eton Events or any event it is producing. Pride London is a community charity and all events that benefit from association with the charity must in turn be in the interests and benefit of the community and charitable principles that Pride London supports. It is unacceptable and indeed illegal for any commercial event to make financial gain by imply or wrongly stating association with a charity.
Pride London would ask that any company or organisation that has been approached to be a part of this event check the intended beneficiaries before making any commitment. We would not want anyone to wrongly belive that their support will be benefiting the work that Pride London carries our in the LGBT community or the current work it is carrying out to further the understanding, enjoyment and participation of arts and cultural events within this community.

+ GRIPPING FINALE OF DOCTOR WHO CLOSES PRIDE SHOW IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE
Torn between loyalty to Pride but don’t want to miss Doctor Who?
The Pride London team and the Doctor Who producers have solved this dilemma by announcing that the last gripping episode in the current series will be shown on the big daylight screen in Trafalgar Square at 7.10pm on Pride Day, Saturday 30 June.
“We are particularly proud of this spectacular and defiantly not- to -be -missed episode,” said producer Phil Collinson today. “Both Russell T Davies and I think its a brilliant idea to ensure that Pride festival goers can see the programme right in the heart of London, in Trafalgar Square on Pride Day.”
The Episode, entitled “Last of The Time Lords,” will be discussed by Doctor Who and Torchwood actor and West End Star, John Barrowman earlier during the day. John’s character, Captain Jack Harkness, appears in the final three episodes of the current series. Freema Agyeman, Doctor Who’s current companion Martha Jones, will also be attending.
“We hit on the idea of screening Doctor Who at the end of our main stage show in response to demand” said Pride Chief Executive Jason Pollock. “Doctor Who is probably the most gay friendly show on our screens and many people were anxious not to miss the last programme – now everyone can celebrate Pride and Doctor Who at the same time!”
The Pride London Main Stage is hosted by Graham Norton, John Barrowman, Amy Lamé, Gaydar Radio’s Jamie Crick and Lucio from Capital Radio. Confirmed artists include Darren Hayes, Unklejam, The Axe Girls, Kelly and the Kelly Girls and many more. From London’s West End the show will also feature extracts from ‘Wicked’ and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 'Joseph'. Also appearing are leading politicians and LGBT activist speakers from around the world.
The programme starts at 3.00 in Trafalgar Square following the Pride Parade from Oxford Street and finishes with the Doctor Who screening at 7.10. The bars will remain open throughout the day.

+ PRIDE FORMS ALLIANCE AGAINST PREJUDICE IN LATVIA
London and Riga unite to promote equality
The LGBT communities of London and Riga are to come together in a unique twinning partnership to support equality and tolerance in both capital cities.
Pride London representatives are due to sign a statement of unity with Riga Pride in the Latvian capital later this month.
As over half a million Londoners from all backgrounds came together in the largest Pride parade the city has ever seen last summer, the LGBT community in Riga were banned from celebrating Pride and suffered violent oppression from homophobic mobs.
Chair of Pride London Paul Birrell said,
“The contrast between London and Riga last year could not have been starker. London was the venue for Europe’s largest gay and lesbian festival with record crowds and a vivid demonstration of the capital’s commitment to tolerance and diversity. Meanwhile the brave men and women of Latvia’s gay and lesbian community, our fellow European Union citizens, were subjected to brutality and an appalling breach of their human rights in scenes that shocked the world.
“The new twinning partnership is the first step to bringing this unacceptable situation to an end, and supporting the human rights of everyone in Europe to live in freedom without fear of violence and abuse. We hope that all citizens of both of these great capital cities will unite to fight for the equality that so many have fought for, for so long.”
Chair of Riga Pride Kristine Garina said,
“We are delighted to twin with London and hope that this will have a real impact on the overt homophobia in our city. Riga Pride and Pride London hope that as many people as possible will travel from the UK to the beautiful city of Riga to help us celebrate our Pride festival from 30 May to 2 June and join the fledgling Pride parade on 2 June.”
The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said,
"As Mayor, I am pleased to support the Pride event in London each year. It is a fundamental democratic right of gays and lesbians to peacefully hold events and demonstrate in Latvia as everywhere."

+ PRIDE 2007 PARADE ROUTE UNVEILED
London’s Pride celebration returns to Oxford Street for 35th Anniversary
35 years after Britain’s first ever Gay Pride march, Pride London has confirmed today that the 2007 parade will return to Oxford Street again after the success of last year’s event.
Last year crowds of over half a million packed the streets of London to watch the spectacular parade of celebrities, floats, and performers celebrating Europe’s largest gay and lesbian festival.
This year’s confirmed route will once again include West End’s world renowned Oxford Street and Regent Street, and take in iconic landmarks including Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Piccadilly, and Houses of Parliament.
Chair of Pride London Paul Birrell said,
“The Pride Parade is one of the highlights of capital’s cultural calendar. It is a unique celebration of diversity and tolerance that is enjoyed by everyone. The event is about bringing people together in a carnival atmosphere and shows London at it’s very best.
“Oxford Street is known throughout the world as London’s most famous street. In 1972 it was where a few thousand courageous marchers began the Pride movement in Britain just 35 years ago. In 2007 it is the right place to celebrate the achievements in the fight for equality, and highlight the persecution and discrimination still faced by the LGBT community around the world.
“Last year we had over half a million Londoners join the celebrations, and this summer we are expecting another record-breaking year”.

+ PRIDE LONDON SCORES NEW FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
Pride London has announced that this year’s festival will feature a football tournament for the first time in the history of the event.
The Ford Pride London Football Tournament will feature both mens and womens teams from all over Britain, and is organised by London Falcons a football team based in Raynes Park.
All the teams competing will then take part in the spectacular Pride Parade on Saturday 30 June, which this year once again passes down London’s Oxford Street. The trophies for the winners will be handed out on the main stage in Trafalgar Square.
Tom Price, Captain of the London Falcons said:
“The aim of the tournament is to attract interest in the gay/bi friendly football world to provide an exhibition of the high standard of play.
We would also like to attract those with an interest in the sport, but who have no idea what our leagues/teams are about to come and watch and maybe destroy some of the stereotypes that we face everyday. Apart from that we want all the teams, both male and female to enjoy a day out in the capital, to enjoy a game of football, to have fun and to get to know a few more of the people from other teams around the country!”
Pride London Chairman Paul Birrell said:
“This is a fantastic addition to the Pride festival calendar. It help to destroy some of the prejudices surrounding gay and lesbian people in sport, and should be a great opportunity to showcase the talents of the gay football community.”
